Morni Hills Places to Visit — And How to Fit Them Together
The places worth stopping at in and around Morni, arranged by where they sit on the road so a day comes together instead of doubling back.
Morni's places are spread along one climb and a few roads at the top. Fitting them into a day is mostly a matter of geography — going up, across, and back down without repeating yourself.
Here they are in the order you meet them from the Tricity.
On the way up
Panchkula
Your last reliable stop for fuel, food and anything forgotten. Treat it as a supply point rather than a destination.
Pinjore
Known for its historic terraced gardens, and there is a well known temple complex in the area too. It sits on the approach side, which makes it a better stop on the way back than on the way up — the lakes are best early. Confirm current timings before planning around it.
Kalka
On the highway towards Shimla and the starting point of the narrow gauge hill railway. Worth a stop if railways interest you, or if you are continuing into Himachal afterwards.
In Morni
Morni village
Market, shops, school and ordinary hill life below the lakes. The most reliable place for food in the area, and the best place to ask directions from someone who knows.
Morni fort
An old fort that visitors go to. Ask locally about current access rather than assuming it is open.
Tikkar Taal
The two lakes above the village. The main draw, best in the early morning, and busiest on weekends in season.
Karoh Peak
The highest point in Haryana lies in these hills. It attracts walkers. Ask locally about the current route and access before building a day around it.
Beyond the lakes
Roads continue into quieter country — Mandana, Bhoj Jabial, Thandog, Baldwala and other settlements. There is nothing organised out there, which is exactly the appeal for some visitors.
- Drive slowly; roads narrow and surfaces vary.
- Ask before turning onto anything that looks like a private track.
- This is the best part of Morni for walking and for quiet.
- Carry water and fuel; there is little out here.
Two routes that work
| Plan | Route | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| One day | Straight up, lakes by mid morning, village for lunch, one quiet road, Pinjore on the way down | Most first visits |
| Two days | Day one as above but stay; day two early walk, quieter settlements, descend after lunch | Anyone who can spare the night |
Rough travel times
- Chandigarh to Morni village: about an hour and a half to two hours.
- Panchkula to Morni village: around an hour and a half.
- Morni village to the lakes: a short drive.
- Lakes to the quieter settlements: minutes to half an hour.
- Morni to Pinjore: under an hour on the way down.
Plan by time rather than by kilometres. Twenty kilometres on the climb takes longer than fifty on the plains.
Practical notes
- Fuel before the climb, not after.
- Carry water and something to eat.
- Confirm timings for anything ticketed before building a day around it.
- Weekends in season are busier everywhere on this route.
- Start the descent with daylight to spare.
Before you set out
- Confirm timings for anything ticketed; they change and are not always posted.
- Fuel before the climb.
- Carry water and something to eat regardless of the plan.
- Note that map applications are unreliable above the village; ask locally.
- Decide your turn back time for the descent before you leave home.
Choosing what to skip
A day in Morni holds fewer things than people expect, and doing three properly beats doing six badly.
- If you have children: lakes and the village. Skip the rest.
- If you walk: one long walk instead of three short stops.
- If you photograph: the lakes early and a viewpoint at dusk; nothing in between.
- If you have elderly parents: the lakes, and a drive on the good roads. Skip anything needing a climb.
- If it is May: everything before ten, then shade.
What people actually ask us
- Can I see everything in a day? The listed places, yes, comfortably.
- Is Pinjore worth the stop? Yes, and it fits better on the way back.
- Should I go past the lakes? For quiet and walking, distinctly.
- Where do I eat? Morni village more reliably than anywhere above it.
If you are also looking at property
This same route shows you four quite different property markets in a day — the belt below the climb, the village, the lake belt and the quiet country beyond. It is the best way to work out which one you actually want.
