Morni Hills in Winter — Cold Nights, Clear Days, Empty Roads

Winter in Morni is written off by people who assume it will be uncomfortable. It is cold at night and it is the clearest, quietest and in many ways the finest season here.

What winter is like

• Cold nights, approaching freezing at the higher points. Bring a proper jacket.
• Pleasant sunny days. In the sun it is comfortable, in the shade it is not.
• The clearest air of the year. Distant ridges are visible that vanish by March.
• Short days. Plan around an early sunset.
• Very few visitors on weekdays.
• No snow. Morni is not high enough, whatever a listing may hint.

Why the views are best now

From March onwards, haze builds through the pre-monsoon months and distant hills soften and then disappear. In December and January the air is washed and cold and visibility is at its longest.

If you have come to Morni for the outlook — or if you are photographing it, or judging a plot for its view — this is the season to do it.

What to pack

1. A proper jacket, not just a sweater. Evenings outside are cold.
2. Layers, since days are warm in the sun and cold in the shade.
3. Warm socks and something for your head.
4. Sunglasses — the light is very bright on clear days.
5. Ask your stay about heating and bedding before you book.
6. A torch, since darkness comes early.

Planning a winter day

The main adjustment is that everything happens earlier. Start at eight rather than ten, and be back before the light goes.

The drive in winter

• Fog on the plains section in the early morning, rather than in the hills.
• The hill road itself is usually clear and dry.
• Darkness comes early — plan the descent for well before sunset.
• Roads are least damaged at this time of year, having recovered from the monsoon.

What is good about winter here

• Longest views of the year.
• Excellent walking — cool, dry ground, no heat.
• Very good birdwatching in the morning.
• Empty weekdays and easy bookings.
• Evenings by a fire, which is a genuine pleasure and not available in May.
• Clear night skies in the quieter areas.

What to check with your accommodation

• Is there heating in the room, and of what kind?
• How many blankets or quilts are provided?
• Is there hot water in the morning as well as the evening?
• Is there an indoor or sheltered place to sit after dark?
• Is there a fire, and is it included?

These five questions decide whether a winter stay is delightful or endured, and they cost nothing to ask.

Winter mornings, which are the point

• The coldest hour is just before sunrise, and the best light comes soon after.
• Frost is possible on open ground at the higher points.
• Birds are active early and the air carries sound a long way.
• Distant ridges are visible that are simply not there in May.
• Take gloves and something warm for your head; you will want to stay out.

Winter in a hill house

If you are staying somewhere basic, or thinking about owning here, winter is worth understanding practically.

• Stone and older houses hold cold; they warm slowly and stay cool.
• South facing rooms are considerably warmer through the day.
• A fireplace earns its place from November to February.
• Roof insulation matters more than wall thickness for comfort.
• Water pipes are rarely a problem at this altitude, but ask.
• Sun on a verandah at eleven in the morning is the best seat in the house.
