Tikkar Taal, Morni Hills — A Complete Guide

Tikkar Taal is the name most people arrive with when they come to Morni. Two lakes above the village, a road between them, and the view that put this corner of Haryana onto weekend itineraries from Chandigarh.

• Two lakes, known locally as the big and the small taal, a short distance apart with a road between them.
• In Morni, above the main village, within Panchkula district, Haryana.
• Surrounded by hill country — terraced fields, orchards, forest and scattered houses.
• A day trip destination for the Tricity rather than a resort town. Facilities are modest.

Where it sits

The last stretch is a hill road with bends. It is fine in an ordinary car in dry weather and slower in rain. Do it in daylight the first time.

When to come

• October and November — clear, warm days, many people's favourite time here.
• December to February — cold and very clear, with the longest visibility of the year.
• March to April — green and pleasant, and the busiest.
• May and June — hot in the afternoon; come early or late in the day.
• Monsoon — dramatic, green and often cloudy, with the road at its worst.

Weekends in season are genuinely busy. A weekday visit is a different and quieter place.

Practical notes

• Facilities are limited. Carry water, and do not count on finding a meal at any particular hour.
• Fuel up before the climb rather than after it.
• Mobile signal is patchy in places.
• Carry your waste back down with you. There is not much of a system up here.
• Check current arrangements for boating, entry or parking before travelling, since these change.

Being near the lakes cuts both ways, and which side you land on depends entirely on why you are buying.

• Land close to the lakes is more often agricultural than residential. Confirm classification before agreeing anything.
• Being near water does not give a plot water. Ask where the supply comes from and see it in May.
• Holdings are frequently inherited and undivided, so count the owner names on a fresh fard.
• Prices here reflect the name as well as the ground. Compare with plots a few kilometres out.

Staying the night

Most of what makes Morni worth the drive happens outside the middle of the day — the evening light, the quiet after visitors leave, and the early morning before they return. A day trip misses all three.

• Accommodation is homestays and small resorts rather than hotels.
• Book ahead in season; there is not much spare capacity.
• Ask about hot water in the evening, which is the most common complaint.
• Ask whether meals are included, since options nearby are limited.
• Ask how far it is from the lakes and whether the last stretch is motorable.

• Is it worth the drive? For a quiet day out from the Tricity, yes. Do not expect a hill station.
• Can I swim? Treat that as a no and check locally before assuming otherwise.
• Is there anywhere to stay? Homestays and small resorts exist in the area. Book ahead in season.
• Is it good with children? Yes, with the usual care near water and on hill roads.
