Morni Hills Weather — The Climate, and What to Pack

Morni sits in the Shivalik foothills of Haryana, high enough to be noticeably cooler than Chandigarh and not high enough to be a cold hill station. Karoh Peak, in these hills, is the highest point in the state.

That middle position explains most of what the weather here does.

How it compares with the plains

• Noticeably cooler than Chandigarh through the summer, particularly at night.
• Colder than the plains in winter, with nights that get close to freezing at the higher points.
• Similar monsoon timing to the plains, but the rain lands harder on slopes.
• No snow. Morni is not high enough, whatever a hopeful listing may suggest.

The difference is real but modest. Do not expect Shimla; do expect a few degrees and a great deal more air.

What each season asks you to pack

Winter, December to February

• Proper warm layers — a jacket, not just a sweater.
• Something warm for the evening outside, which is when the cold arrives.
• Warm bedding if your stay is basic; ask in advance about heating.
• Sunglasses. The light is very bright on clear days.

Spring, March and April

• Light clothes for the day, one warm layer for the evening.
• Walking shoes; this is the best walking season.
• Sun protection, which people forget because it feels pleasant.

Summer, May and June

• Light cotton, a hat, and sun protection.
• More water than you think you need.
• Something warm anyway for the early morning.
• Plan indoors or in shade for the middle of the day.

Monsoon, July to September

• Rain protection and a spare set of dry clothes.
• Footwear with grip; tracks are slippery.
• Mosquito protection.
• A torch, since power cuts are more likely.
• Patience with the road, which takes the most damage now.

Weather and the drive

• Winter: fog on the plains section in the early morning rather than in the hills.
• Summer: fine, but the climb is hot in a car without air conditioning.
• Monsoon: stones and small slips onto the road happen and are cleared. Allow extra time.
• Any season: drive the hill section in daylight until you know it.

Checking the forecast

Forecasts for Panchkula or Chandigarh will be close but not exact — expect Morni to be a few degrees cooler and to catch rain the plains may miss. Ask wherever you are staying; people who live here read the sky better than any application.

Morni changes more within a day than most places, and planning around that matters more than the season.

• West facing ground is hot through summer afternoons and lovely in winter.
• East facing is cool in the afternoon and cold on winter afternoons.
• North facing wooded slopes stay damp and shaded.
• Higher and more exposed means more wind and more weather.
• Valley bottoms hold cold air at night and fog in the monsoon.

If you are choosing a plot rather than a hotel room, these five lines matter more than any average temperature.
